Natural gas is a vital part of our lives. It would be hard to live without it. Natural gas is the blue flame that cooks our food at the turn of a knob, heats our water at the turn of a faucet and powers the lights with a flick of a switch. Turning on a light seems like a such a simple thing, but it takes enormous amounts of energy to keep the light on all over Los Angeles and across Southern California.
Natural gas is the backbone of our electricity system. It provides 40 percent of our electricity today and will drive most of California's power plants in the future. According to the California Energy Commission, "Natural gas power plants are also the best complement to renewable resources" and they will help curb greenhouse gas emissions by replacing dirty coal-fired electricity.
Natural gas is also the preferred alternative fuel to replace diesel engines that spew toxins into the air. Natural gas powered buses, like the blue MTD buses with CNG or LNG on the back, are more than 75 percent cleaner than the old diesel buses moving the public today. Unfortunately, there are still thousands of diesel school buses ushering around our children every day. Natural gas will also help us clean up L.A.'s biggest source of pollution at our ports to ensure these two economic engines continue to generate jobs and prosperity in the region.
We must make the right decisions right now for California's energy future. We cannot wait until another crisis consumes us to seek new supplies of natural gas. By then, it will be too late. We can't play catch-up with energy.
